Plug-in Notes:

There are literally hundreds of proprietary (privately owned and controlled) file types that the standard Web brower cannot display. To utilize these files - the end-user must configure their browser for the required plug-in application.

Below are a few common examples:

  • Crescendo:- LiveUpdate - .mid, .mp3, etc.
  • Flash/Shockwave:- Macromedia - .swf, .fla, etc.
  • QuickTime:- Apple - .qt
  • Real Audio:- Real Networks- .rm, .ram, etc.
  • Windows Media Player:- Microsoft - .mp3, .avi, .wma, etc.

It is important to remember that both the plug-in interface and the browser reside on the "Application Layer" of the OSI model while the files themselves fall within the "Presentation" Layer.
