The Digital Phone

Features and Functions of the Digital Desk Phone?
PBX Telephone Lines or Extensions A multiple-line phone is dropped off to the user's desktop on one pair. (tip & ring)
  • PBX (Private Branch Exchange):
    Shelf 04 Slot 01 Port 16
  • MDF (Main Distribution Frame):
    04-01-16
  • IDF (Intermediate Distribution Frame):
    Pair 22
  • SPP (Station Patch Panel):
    Station 9
  • Station Jack (Voice-side):
    Jack V9

Types of Telephone Lines or Extensions:

  • Line 1 - 2276
Usually a Direct Inward Dial Number:
    (423) NNN-2276
  • Line 2 - 8285
    Usually Non-DID:
Allows calls to Line 1 rollover to Line 2 on a busy condition.
  • Line Appearance - 2277.
You might work outside of Material Handling but want to know if someone in there is on the phone.
Note: This line may or may not have dial-tone.
  • The Line Appearance could also be programmed to be a special ringdown extension. In other words - go off-hook on this extension and it will automatically outcall to a designated number locally or on the Public Switched Network.
Feature Buttons or Keys
  • Msg Wtg - Message Waiting lights the LED when a message is present in your voice mail box. This button can be programmed to dial directly into your voicemail.
  • Camp - allows you to Camp on a busy extension. When the called party hangs up - the PBX will call you back and when you go off-hook - the call will be placed to your intended party.
  • Park - you got a call from Pete and he wants transferred to Mary. Mary is in conversation on her phone. The Park Button allows you to Park Pete onto Mary's phone until she hangs up. Then the PBX will put Pete's call through to Mary's phone.
  • Time - displays the PBX's time. Hopefully, it is in synch with the correct Time Zone!
  • Xfer - there are two basic transfer types:
    Supervised:
Pete calls and asks to be transferred to Jeff.
You hit the Xfer Button - dial Jeff - Jeff picks up your call and you say:
"Hi Jeff - Pete want's to talk to you", and then you hang up. If Jeff's extension is busy - hit transfer again to return to Pete.
Unsupervised: Pete calls and asks to be transferred to Jeff. You hit the Xfer Button - dial Jeff. Hang up!
Note: Avoid the term Blind Transfer for obvious reasons. Equally the word deaf can get you into difficult situations.
  • Spd - Speed Dials come in two forms:
System Speed - (#7)12 within the PBX could translate 1 800 NNN XXXX.
Station Speed - (#3)10 within the PBX could translate to internal extension 7771.
  • DND - Do Not Disturb - you want a little peace and quiet to finish a task. Hit the DND Button and all your inbound calls will go to a designated number. (Usually voice mail)
  • Save - Save & Repeat will allow to redial a previous busy extension.
  • Conference/Flash - Both buttons are usually employed in concert. You want to place a call to several people:
Get the first party - press Flash - get the next party - press Conference - both parties can chat while you press Flash again to get the next party and so on. Pretty soon you can have quite a few folks chatting up a storm in Conference!
  • Mute - Need advice from your boss while talking to a customer. Hit the Mute Button. You can hear the caller but the caller can't hear your conversation with your boss.
  • Hold - You have to ask advice during a telephone call. Place the caller on Hold where they will listen to your Music-on-Hold until you return. Hopefully, within the caller's lifetime! The Hold feature is also known as a Hard Hold.
  • Spkr - allows hands-off telephone conversations. Be aware that most caller's hate it when you have them on Speaker. It's always smart to ask before you do it!
  • Fwd - Get dial-tone - press Fwd once plus the Forward to extension number - hang up. Get dial-tone - press twice to remove Forward and hang up.
Note: some folks will not let you forward to external numbers for obvious reasons. Hong Kong may not be in your LATA!
  • Flash - also known as a Soft Hold. Used in conjunction with the Conference Button. This is a really neat way to do a professional Supervised transfer!
Notes: If your an aspiring PBX System Admin make sure you create two separate phones on your desktop.

One - for everyday business use.
Two - to play around on - re-configured etc.

Don't get caught screwing up transfers and stuff when you have a visitor in your office simply because you had re-programmed your own phone and had forgotten where you put the Conference Button.

It doesn't look good if it appears that you don't know how to use the phone!

Always remember that the functions on any PBX phone can be accessed via Feature Codes. Be very careful how you create, modify, open-up or restrict this functionality.
